Hosts Qatar, India, Kazakhstan to contest Asia Rugby Men’s Division 2 Championship 2023

India, Kazakhstan and Qatar will contest this year’s Asia Rugby Men’s Division 2 Championship in Doha, Qatar from 30th April to 6th May 2023 at the Aspire Warm Up Track.

The tournament gets underway on Sunday 30th April with hosts Qatar taking on India in what is expected to be a bruising and exciting first match, India then faces another formidable opponent, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday 3rd May and the Division 2 Championship concludes on 6th May, with the champion crowned after the last trilateral Championship’s match: Kazakhstan vs. Qatar.

India comes into the tournament having won the Asia Rugby Division 3 South, that was held in Kolkata, India. They were dominant in the tournament, posting over 80 points in both matches, against Bangladesh as well as the debutant to the Asia Rugby Championship circuit, Nepal.

Kazakhstan made their way into the Championship after winning Asia Rugby Division 3 Central. The tournament, held in July 2022 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, saw Kazakhstan winning against the host nation by a massive 113-5 margin, then withstanding tough competition from neighbour Uzbekistan and prevailing 32-24.

Qatar won the AR Division 3 West tournament after defeating Iran 40-12 at the Al Ain Amblers Rugby Club in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 10th February 2023, and will have the home ground advantage.
