AWES Cup: Salgaocar FC, FC Goa in goalless draw

Salgaocar FC managed a goalless draw against FC Goa to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the semi-finals of the AWES Cup, organised by the Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportspersons in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Friday.

Salgaocar had stunned Indian Super League (ISL) club FC Pune City in their opening game and will now qualify for the semi-final if they defeat Dempo Sports Club in their concluding group clash. FC Goa have just one point from two matches and will have to depend on other results to qualify.

FC Goa could have scored full points from this game but missed many chances. The best chance came in the 90th minute of play when Hayden Fernandes missed a penalty as his attempt struck the goalpost.

The penalty was awarded after Salgaocar defender Stephen Alvares brought down FC Goa’s Imran Khan inside the box.

For most of the second session, FC Goa had chances to win this game but could not convert the chances. Salgaocar goalkeeper Jason D’Mello also effected a couple of good saves to keep his team in the hunt.

Salgaocar were impressive in the first half and should have been at least a goal ahead. Their best chance fell at the feet of Ronaldo Oliveira in the 25th minute when he pounced on a weak clearance but his effort from just outside the box struck the goalpost.

FC Goa also had the misfortune of seeing one of their attempt hit the post. Imran thought he had scored a goal when he was presented with a close-range opportunity but his attempt ricocheted off the goalpost.

Salgaocar will next play Dempo SC on September 4 while FC Goa will face FC Pune City on September 6.

Tomorrow's match
