Truecaller’s all (100M Indian users are) dressed up, but with nowhere to go

Poor Truecaller.    I never believed I’d use those two words together, but such is Truecaller’s plight. The 10-year-old Swedish company uses software algorithms and crowdsourced databases from over 140M of its users to "guess” the identity of anyone who calls them. But over the years, they’ve been such flagrant violators of our individual and collective privacy that I think of them as the true anti-vaxxers of digital privacy. Because vaccination in the real world, after a threshold, leads to higher “herd immunity”—those who are immune end up indirectly providing protection to those who aren’t. But with Truecaller, every user who signs up and contributes private data for its databases ends up indirectly compromising the privacy of even those who have never used Truecaller.   But today’s story by Arundhati isn’t about Truecaller’s numerous privacy violations, for which a simple DuckDuckGo search would do. Instead, it's about the company’s repeated pivots and search for

The seasonal fishing ban will go on for 61 days, ending on July 31. The annual monsoon trawling ban in  Goa  will come into effect from June 1. The ban will go on for 61 days, ending on July 31. The seasonal fishing holiday is meant to facilitate breeding of fish during the season. The State Fisheries Department has issued an order banning trawling through mechanised boats during the period. However, the registered motorised canoes using gill nets have been exempted. Nearly 1,500 trawlers in the coastal State would be anchored till July 31 as the annual trawling ban will be implemented along the western coast in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. A notification from the State asserts that the government of Goa prohibits fishing by vessels fitted with mechanical means of propulsion and by means of trawl-net and purse-seine net. “Except fishing by the registered motorised canoes using only gill nets and fitted with outboard or inboard motors of up to 10HP capacity, as a m

Music is his passion and farming as a hobby give him kicks. He is all but eighty-one years in age, but yet not given up on the things he was most of fond of in life- cultivating his paddy field and rearing his she buffaloes for milk.  1 of 4   A decade back, his paddy fields yielded two crops in a season. But with the adjoining paddy fields converted into a housing project only one crop is possible per season now – a death knell for farming in the Indian state of Goa. For the umpteen time Joao Santan Rebello cast his vote last month, to elect his representative to the 15th Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian parliament, since Goa got liberated from the Portuguese in 1962. Much has changed over the years with modernization in the tourist-resort state, the small state of India which welcomes some four millions foreign tourists every year. In the race to build mega housing projects to cater to the tourists many a paddy fields have fallen prey. People like Rebello who hails from

Indian football sailing in trouble waters

The AIFF reacting to the joint statement of Hero I-League clubs feel that it is very premature and unnecessary to pre-judge any action of the AIFF, and be commenting on the AIFF Executive Committee meeting on July 3, 2019 in advance. The AIFF as a custodian of Indian Football has always endeavoured to balance to the interest of all stakeholders, and the Hero I-League, and its clubs. To say that the future of Hero I-League, and the clubs will not be taken into consideration for any future decisions of the AIFF would be unfair. As a matter of fact, a decision regarding the Hero Indian Super League becoming a league were also discussed with AFC, and FIFA before it was given recognition, and even for any future decisions AFC and FIFA will be duly consulted. In fact, during the last AFC AGM in Paris, the AIFF asked the AFC General Secretary Dato Windsor John to visit India specifically for Hero I-League issues. Furthermore, while the decision of the AIFF Executive Committee ca

Yoga stories of fraud and sexual assaults from Goa

***WARNING: THIS MAN IS A FRAUD!*** HE STOLE MY MONEY! PLEASE BE AWARE!! The story: His name is NEERAJ CHOUDHARY. He is from Haridwar and operates mainly in Rishikesh and Dehradun. I have known him for 2 years and I was in Rishikesh in October 2018. When I returned to the UK, Neeraj asked me if I would be interested in setting up a business with him: an online booking platform comparing yoga schools, mainly in Rishikesh, and then other parts of India. He told me he would speak to the main ashram owners in Rishikesh to get them onto the website and he would like to have a stand/stall in the INTERNATIONAL YOGA FESTIVAL in RISHIKESH to promote the business. We agreed to go ahead and he said he would develop the website in India. He sent me a couple of quotes on which we agreed. He asked me for 25,000 Indian Rupees = $350 (half the payment for the website and the other half for flyers and posters, which he would then post to me in the UK. I transferred the money to him in November 201

How many subscribers do you have?

How many subscribers do you have? It’s a question I get asked often when people find out where I work. Everyone wants to know. My friends (Answer: A lot). My landlord (Answer: Enough to pay rent). Uncles on WhatsApp groups (No answer because family whatsapp group is muted for one year). I can’t help but think what a shift it has been. Nearly a year back, around the time , the response to the same question was met with a mix of confusion, sympathy, polite smiles and some mild cheek-pinching. A What a shift. Movies on Netflix. Music on Spotify. Storage on iCloud. Deliveries from Amazon Prime. The more I think about it, everything starts to look like a subscription. My house help runs a version of a subscription service. So does my cook. Even my rented apartment is essentially a subscription. Subscriptions have been around forever. Subscriptions are coming up everywhere. Our story today is about the ones that have hopped on the bandwagon last, but sho

The Julie Moss story – ‘Crawl If You Fall’ the strength of the human spirit! Thirty-seven years ago, the surprise front-runner Julie Moss collapsed just 15 feet shy of the finish line at the 1982 IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii. In one of the most famous moments in televised sports history, as the 23-year-old fledgling triathlete used her hands to drag her body across the finish line. Moss was a kinesiology student and s he entered the race as her senior research project. All she needed to earn her diploma was to finish the race. Instead, she shot to fame in a way ABC sportscaster Jim McKay called “the most agonizing moment I’ve ever seen in sports.” The full IRONMAN triathlon challenge is a 3.86 km swim, a 180.25 km bicycle ride and a full marathon run of 42.20 km. Back then, IRONMAN was virtually unknown except to the world’s most extreme endurance athletes. IRONMAN was launched in 1978 in Oahu, it first attracted only a couple hundred competitors, mostly men, for the grue

Pliskova withdraws from Doha with viral illness

Image
Q.  Just curious what exactly is wrong and when you started feeling some symptoms and when you started feeling sick. KAROLINA PLISKOVA: Actually, from the first day when I arrived, already the day after Fed Cup, I felt after I played my match with Simona, which was super long and tough, so I just felt somehow exhausting. Yeah, from the first day I was not feeling great and not ready. I have never felt actually this way. It's normal that you are tired, of course, when you are traveling and playing a lot of matches. But I just feel somehow my body is not ready. I had a temperature few days. I don't have any neck pain or something, but I just feel overall like super tired, and my muscles are just hurting from the morning without even doing anything. So I'm just not able to compete 100% today. Q.  Are these familiar symptoms? Have you felt like this before? KAROLINA PLISKOVA: No. Actually, I didn't, but I know there is a lot of viral illness going on, not even here but a
