Ansh Gaonkar hockey player from Goa: From dirt track to scoring a superlative goal at the Hockey Sub-Junior National championship in Gujarat

Ansh Gaonkar hockey player from Goa: From dirt track to scoring a superlative goal at the Hockey Sub-Junior National championship in Gujarat

This is the story of Ansh Gaonkar from Gudi-Paroda and his journey of scoring a superlative goal at the Sub-Junior National championship growing up as he was on the dirt tracks of his village.

The village ground in Gudi is where the future Goan hockey players train which falls in Cuncolim Constituency represented in the Goa Legislative Assembly by Yuri Alemao, including Ansh Gaoankar son of Ankush Gaonkar.

Last month, the young boy scored a superb goal at the recently concluded West Zone Subjunior Championship in Surat Gujarat. The Gudi-born boy a student of Damodar English High School Gudi Paroda dribbled his way past seven players to score the only goal for Goa in the 11–1 to Chhattisgarh Hockey.

His goal did not go unnoticed from Hockey India officials who applauded his feat and his Physical Education teacher Amit Dessai, as manager of the same Goa team was at hand to pat his superb show.

It is not the fault of the boys and girls, all of them who are school students of Damodar English High School Gudi Paroda.

Ansh journey began on the dirt track of Gudi Paroda under the watchful eyes of Amit Dessai.

Yes a dirt track, there are no big or small size astro track for these boys and girls from this village and for that matter for many of the young talented sportsmen from the surrounding villages.

It is not the fault of the Physical Education teachers of the school or the school management that they have to practice on this feeble loaded ground and not an astro turf where most of the game is played.

It is system that has fails them. The private enterprises. The Goans Hockey, the parent body controlling the game in the state and also the state and central government, which have been ignoring the talent in the such semi-rural setting. Forget about the rural settings for the moment.

Everybody knows that the game of hockey has moved from grass to astro turf a few decades and we in Goa still play on such dirt tracks ground. Forget about astro turf, such grounds in Gudi Paroda does not even a grass and is the red virgin soil of Goa.

The red virgin soil of Goa which has produced many a football players for the country but till now no hockey player from the state has made it to the national team.

Hockey who have been born and raised elsewhere in the country has shown and played for India, but none who played and learnt the game in Goa.

Goans have gone and played for many a countries in the world where they have settled and made their home.

Coming to the modern game, you do not need rocket science to tell the sports administrators that you do not need a full-size astro turf hockey ground to develop new talent and training them from on the surface where all the national championships are played right from Sub-junior, Junior to Senior championship.

There are a lot of technical issues which cannot be solved within a fortnight when the young players shift from these dirt grounds to astro turf, talk to any technical person and you will know.

Two things is the bounce and speed at which the ball travels and bounce on such dirt tracks and on astro turf, there is wide-wide gap between the two, to put across the point of playing on dirt tracks and astro turf.

Alas the Goans Hockey administrators should have understood the problem and worked in the direction of rectifying the problem.

Sadly these people at Goans Hockey have an ‘Agenda within an agenda”.

Forget about the era before 2009, when these very people were in charge of Goan hockey in various capacities, but let’s talk post 2009 when Goans Hockey was formed.

These people have been in charge of the Association since then, switching post from secretary to vice president to treasurer, but have shown no effort to promote talent and groom talent.

Nil Hockey Development programmes by Goans Hockey in the state

What are the Youth Development programs and policy that Goans Hockey have…… NOTHING ON PAPER OR IN PRACTICE.

Is giving hockey sticks to Schools and High Secondary Youth development. Certainly not.

Talking about hockey sticks, Indian Olympians of Goan origin Joaquim Carvalho, Merwyn Fernandes and Clarence Lobo, are doing the job to keep the hockey spirit going in the state. But they know that to take the game to the next level Goa needs small size hockey astro turf and good coaching program in place. Dedicated coaching staff and support staff along with passionate people who will work with the coaching personnel.

Talk to these Olympians and to any knowledgeable person, who is into youth Development and they will tell you that in the modern era, just like Futsal in football, it is the 5-a-side astro turfs are the places where the young players across the country and in the world where the technical skills are learned and horned under expert coaches.

Down in the South Goa, there are two places, which come to mind when it comes to astro turf surfaces…. one in Benaulim — Good Angels Sports Arena at Mariabhat Benaulim and the second one is Kings School in Mugali, Sao Jose de Areal.

At Kings, coaches Sagun and Vijay are trying to carry forward the hockey agenda forward with his stellar efforts backed by the sports management lead by its dynamic Chairman Melwin Pereira.

So if you need to produce champion and quality hockey players, you need to move to small astro turf in the absence of full size astro turf.

For the records, Goa only has one full size astro turf at Peddem Mapusa and it is the only ground where the state championship are held.

Ironically, the North Goa players and clubs play all their zonal matches on astro turf while the South Goa counterparts play on such dirt grounds.

The South Goa winners then move to North to take on the winners from North Goa, what a sea of change n terms of ground and change in settings, which they have to adjust to.

Talking about dirt tracks, Schools hockey tournament for South Goa schools (more specifically Salcete schools) suffer the ignominy of playing on such dirt tracks in events organized by Directorate of Sports and Youth affairs .

No schools from Sanguem, Canacona, Quepem and even Vasco talukas do not take part in organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth affairs also suffers the same fate.

No wonder there was not a single player from South Goa in the Goa team for the National Games 2023, of the two in the women team and one in the men’s dream were dropped in the first stage of the diet camp itself.

Talking about the coaches development, the less said the better in the state.

Of the three coaches working with Sports Authority of Goa, all the three are based in North Goa, clearly indicating where the power centre lies when it comes to hockey talent in the state.

Talent always does not win in the Indian content and that holds true for Goa.

if players from the North Goa dominate on the ground the same is not true for the sports administrators’ with people from Salcete holding the reins of the game through dubious clubs with never take part in the South Goa championships, the records which are forged to suit the interests of the clubs and the sports administrators larger interests.

Holding on to the power and the related perks which come along with it.

Save Goa from such sports administrators and the game play away from the paly field to the determent of the interests of young hockey players.

North-Goa based industrialist and veteran hockey player Atul Pai Kane will take on South Goans Hockey President Abhay in the August 15 Presidential elections of Goans Hockey, the parent body controlling the sports in the state, which will be held at a Margao hotel.

The decks for the President’s contest have been cleared with the Returning Officer Mildred Mendonca declaring the names of the two, as after scrutiny he found the papers of the two in order.

With the no withdrawals, the field is now open for the Independence contest.

Atul Pai Kane, who traces his root to Assolna village in South but now is based in Mapusa, is an active hockey player and plays regularly at the Peddem ground in Mapusa on the weekends and is a philanthropist having lend his helping to many a sporting and social projects and has grand plans to take the game to a new level with the cooperation of the stake holders in the state.

On the other hand, Hockey South Goa President Abhay Bhamaikar had no connections with the game of hockey and has never paid the game. Bhamaikar has been a chess player and was brought on board by the former Velim MLA and Goans Hockey General Secretary Farrel Furtado e Gracias to take the post of President of the district association, one year back.

The elections process for the vacant President post were declared vide a letter dated 8th March this year, signed by Farrel, but the process has been dragging on since then.

The need for the President’s elections arose as businessman Xavier Marquis, representing Sanguem Cultural and Sports Club, tendered his resignation from the post almost a year back, after serving one year of his four-year term.

The current Executive Committee was elected in the elections held on September 8, 2022 in Margao and consists of Vice Presidents: Carl D’Souza and Valanka D’Souza, General Secretary: Farrel, Treasurer: Aloysious Anthony D’Souza, Joint Secretaries: Nelly Rodrigues, Mahesh Rivankar, Executive Committee members: Inacio Fernandes, Anjulo Fernandes, Fausia Shaikh, Beny Viegas, Dattesh Priolkar, Sam Braganza, Danrette Vaz and Roger Ray D’Souza Vito.

Strangely, Valanka D’Souza got to the vice president’s post representing Bambina Recreational Club but two years after her club is not eligible to vote in the August elections and the same is the case of Sanguem Cultural and Sports Club represented by Xavier Marquis and Fausia Shaikh.

Incidentally, it was Mendonca who oversaw the September 8, 2023 election process.

Meanwhile four of the Executive committee members, Treasurer Aloysious D’Souza, Sam Braganza and Carl D’Souza will not be voting for varied reasons in the Presidential elections.

A chunk of the clubs from North Goa have been debarred and declared illegible to vote at the President elections which includes Young Sports Hockey Club which has been doing yeomen service for the game in Mapusa and its surrounding areas.

At the last elections, treasurer Aloysious was representing Young Sports Hockey Club, but his club has been debarred from elections for not renewing their Society Registration Certificate under the Society Registration Act.

Carl De Souza on the other hand, had represented Innovation Socio Cultural and Sports Club at the 2022 elections but will not be voting in the current elections.

On the other hand, Sam Braganza and Dattesh Priolkar, got to the Executive committee representing Hockey North Goa, with Sam been a member of Young Sports Hockey Club. It was not known which club Dattesh was representing as he made his way to the Hockey North Goa, who is still an active player till last year and captained the Goans Hockey team at the 2023 National Games held in Goa.

Most of the clubs contacted from North Goa had no clue when the elections of North Goa hockey district association were held and they are completely in the dark till date.

The North Goa clubs have also been caught on the wrong foot in spite of having two principal office bearers --- Treasurer and Vice President --- on the Executive Committee with only two clubs, Don Bosco Oratory Sports and Cultural Club and Goa Maverick's Sports and Cultural Club along with Hockey North Goa members eligible to vote on August 15 elections.

From South Goa, Hockey South Goa along with Integrated Goa Welfare Development Trust, Innovation Socio Cultural and Sports Club, Goa Hockey Promoters, Maina Hockey Club and Star Sports and Cultural Club will vote at the elections.

The North Goa clubs which have erased from the President electoral college for not renewing their Certificate of Registration issued by Registrar of Societies under the Society Registration act of 1960, include San Antonio Warriors, Crozan Society, Young Sports Hockey Club, Sports and Cultural Club Porvorim and Sattari Hockey Club, while the last one for not furnishing their Certificate of Registration, which the club has misplaced.

The clubs which have disappeared from the Goans Hockey radar from South Goa include Aquem Baixo Socio Cultural Association, Associacao Academica Majorda -Utorda- Calata, Navelim Hockey Club, Guddi Sports Club and Majorda Hockey Club.

Sailing: Coelho’s journey through the storms in the sea

Sailing  Coelho’s journey through the storms in the sea

“I have an earnest desire to leave something in this world and a profound desire to rub it in the face of anyone who doubted me....,” says Indian sailing team member at the ongoing Asian Games Dayne Coelho in a facebook post with a picture of his draped in the Indian tri-colour after winning a medal at the 37th Singapore open windsurfing championship this year.

Dayne wants to prove his detractors wrong. Cold shouldered and neglected by Sports Authority of Goa the teenager is scripting his own success story against all odds… thanks in large measure to his sportingly inclined family.

The Indian sports system is fraught with bureaucratic red tape, political interference, conflicts of interest and corruption and the Coelho family has had a bitter firsthand experience.

Dayne along with sister Katya Coelho are the only athletes from the coastal state of Goa who are part of the Indian sailing team at the ongoing Asian Games in Jakarta Indonesia.

Coached by their father Donald, a former national windsurfing champion for three consecutive years from 2010-12, the Coelho siblings will be vying for medals in the mixed event on August 24.

But making it to the Games has not been an easy story. They have been neglected in their home by a government, which did little to support the athletic prowess of the two talented youngsters.

Lack of transparency, poor asset management and an absence of a framework for measuring impact of public spending has been the hall mark of Sports Authority of Goa, the sports wing of the Goa government which has stone walled the athletes request for 2 windsurfing boards.

The Coelho’s pursuit to get an Asian Games ticket can be attributed to individual acts of brilliance without much help from the system.

The two Goans attained the qualifying mark for the Asian games at the Yachting Association of India (YAI) selection trials held in April 16-22 in Chennai.

The trials were held to select the top sailors for inclusion in the Indian Sailing Team for the 17th Asian Sailing Championship that was held from June 18-24 and the Asian Games 2018.

“We thank YAI (Yachting Association of India) especially, Capt. Ajay Narang Member Task Force 2020, who stood by Goan talent and strongly recommended case to MYAS/SAI for training programme in Thailand under the Thai coach for 21 days in month of May in preparation for the Asian Games 2018. The most disheartening is our state association (Goan Yatching Association), the proposal for procurement of 2 windsurfing boards is still pending for more than 4 months. Katya and Dayne with their zero self esteem, ready for departure with the old equipment,” coach-cum-father Donald said on the eve of the departure to Indonesia.

“The proposal for two windsurfing boards was put up nearly 4 months ago. This should have been their top priority so they can perform better, now they have gone (for the Asian Games) with their old equipment which has seen a lot of wear and tear,” lamented Nelita Coelho, maternal aunt of the participating sailors in a post on facebook.

“Indeed, "Historic moment" for the state of Goa to be a part of the Indian Contingent  at the “Asian Games”2018, (but), If the sports authorities cannot help even after proving their talent, then what else is left. Goa can never shine,” she added.

“The state has so much of talent but the sports authorities step motherly treatment shown and corruption galore it took these two so many years to come this and even then their eyes have not opened,” she added, while requesting all to share so that “so we can bring out all the scams and skeletons in the department to get justice for our Goan budding talent.”

Dayne (20) and Katya (19) have been taking part in the Youth Olympic Class for boys and girls over the last few years and they will be competing in the RS:One Mixed Team event whcihis open for sailors below the age of 22 years.

The RS:One Mixed Team event is been held for the first time at the Asian Games.

Dayne who has been training individually for the last 3 years in preparation for the Asian games and demonstrated his excellence achieving silver and bronze medal at 37th Singapore open windsurfing championship 2018 in RS: One Class. Men and Youth category.

Katya, a student of Ardee School, Porvorim, Sangolda, Penha de França was the first Indian girl to represent India at Youth Olympic 2014, held in China and she is eager to give her best.

“I am so proud of my kids; it’s one of the happiest days of my life as it was my dream as much as theirs to win a medal for the country. It was a proud moment for us, as Indians, to see the Indian flag flying high on the shores of Singapore and making it all the more special was the fact that we celebrated this victory together on the eve of our 66th Republic Day,” Donald had said after Dayne’s win in Singapore this year.

Donald himself was spellbound by the sport when he was introduced to it at the age of 20. Donald has been the National Champion in Windsurfing for three consecutive years (2010, 2011, 2012). He wanted his children to show the same enthusiasm towards the sport and they didn’t disappoint him.

“It was in 2006-07 when I had gone to Italy for a competition that I saw small kids taking to the sea with great equipment. I bought the equipment for Dayne and since he used to watch me participate in the Nationals, he took to the water quite naturally,” recalls Donald.

Dayne and Katya have a set schedule for their studies and their training. “We practise every day regardless of the wind conditions as we can’t predict any weather conditions for the competitions. From 2.30pm to 5pm, we train in the sea. I go by the coach boat to brief them while they practise their techniques under my guidance. Katya has very good techniques while Dayne loves strong winds,” explains Donald. Besides training in the water, the youngsters also spend 90 minutes in the gym, training core muscles.

Donald’s dedication towards the sport is not limited to his family. In 2009, Donald formed the Goa Beach Sport Academy which conducts annual camps for people interested. Although Donald hopes the popularity of the sport picks up in Goa, he acknowledges that the cost of equipment, which is a minimum of Rs 1 lakh, as well as the fact that parents are unsure about the seriousness of the sport in their child’s life, are drawbacks that need to be tackled. But he’s facing these challenges with full optimism.

Goans fans experience Arabic culture during World Cup

World Cup fans immerse in Qatari dress with Thobe, Ghutra, and Igal

BY ARMSTRONG VAZ

Doha, Qatar:  Vasco-based Vishal Agapurkar always wanted to slip into the traditional Arabic dress as and when the opportunity came his way. After waiting for a few years, the World Cup in Qatar presented him with the perfect platform to try out a few things from cuisine to the local dresses.

Taking the adage, a step further, Vishal and his friends all Portugal supporters bought a Ghutra and Igal at Souq Waqif with traditional colours of green and red, a popular traditional market and after some expert help from the shop assistants managed to wear the Ghutra and Igal, the headgear which along with Thobe, the long full garment is one of the traditional dress of men in the Arabic world especially in the Middle East countries.

The Ghutra worn on the head is tied around the head, the cap is known as the Kahfiyah, and the Ighal is draped over the Ghutra. Igal is to prevent the Ghutra from blowing away in the wind. Igal is a thick ring of cotton. A thread or string is tied around it. Igal, meaning rope, is part of the traditional Arab headdress. Igal is used above the head-dress called Ghutra and above the cap called Kafiyah.

“All Igals are almost identical. The main difference will be in the yarn used. Nylon, cotton or goat and camel hair. The best Igal is made of sheep hair. Most of them are imported from Turkey, Brazil and other countries. But the finest sheep's hair comes from England,” said one Bangladeshi shop assistant working at a shop selling traditional dress.

Shops in and around Qatar are not selling Kahfiyah and a Qatari shop owner explains why they are not selling it.

“The Kahfiyah is a cap which is worn by people who wear the headgear for a long period time as it helps in absorbing the sweat,” explains, Khalifa Abdul Hakim Al Naimi, owner of an Ghutra Mundo enterprise which sells the traditional headgear at five different locations during the world Cup.

Naimi and his shop support staff have been helping thousands of fans to have the uniqueness of the Arabic world and helping them to move into the traditional gear.

Traditional belief is that the headscarf helps to ward off the heat from the desert sun and also protects from the dust.

“The head gear was used by our ancestors to protect us Arabs from the heat of the sun and from the wind, and also from the dust. I'm trying to mix the Arabic culture and customs and teach the World Cup fans something about Qatar,” said Al Naimi.

“It's (the head gear) part of our culture, but we are blending it with the countries that are competing in the World Cup. So for Brazil the Ghutra, Igal and Thob match the colors, so yellow, blue and green represent Brazil. and also we have the Brazilian flag, but it's usually plain without any names or without any letters. We have Portugal, Morocco, Mexico.”

“We have different colors for all different flags. South Korea, Brazil, Senegal, Ghana, Uruguay, Portugal, Denmark, Serbia, all teams which are competing in the FIFA 22 Qatar World Cup.”

Explaining further he says: “We have plain clothes just like what I am wearing which is white, so we don't want to put any names on the Thobe.”

Al Nuami says the original Arabic culture and dress is kept intact by generations.

“Besides the white Thobe we have different coloured Thobe. We wear colorful tubes in winter as well. In the winter, you can also see the black Thobe, the brown Thope and the gray top stripes. But it's usually plain without any names or without any letters. So that's what we try to do. So yellow and blue and yellow and green represent Brazil. We have. Even heard him represent Portugal, representing Morocco, Mexico united with the corresponding battle.”

The Qatari through his enterprise is helping many people to have a firsthand experience of Qatar culture and traditions and the head gear and one of them.

Just like Vishal, many Indians and other nationalities are making a mad rush to Souq Wafiq metro station shop trying to buy World Cup memorabilia.

Gurpreet and Sanju declared winners of AIFF Player of the Year Awards

NEW DELHI: Indian National Team goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Sanju are the winners of the 2019-20 AIFF Men's Footballer of the Year Award, and the 2019-20 AIFF Women’s Footballer of the Year Award respectively.

This is the first time Gurpreet has received this prestigious award, and in the process he became the second goalkeeper after Subrata Paul in 2009 to be named the AIFF Player of the Year. The Blue Tigers custodian was elected as the winner on the basis of votes from Hero Indian Super League and Hero I-League club coaches.

“There was always a desire to reach this point and this is an Award which I have always looked up to. Chhetri-bhai (Sunil Chhetri) has won it so many times and I have always thought when I can be worthy enough to win it,” Gurpreet said. “Huge thanks go to AIFF and everyone who has supported and helped me relentlessly to help me achieve this today” he added. “Garnering the all-important draw against Asian Champions Qatar in Doha, eleven clean sheets in last Hero Indian Super League edition, winning the Golden Glove award could not have been possible without the team.”

“A big thank you to all Hero Indian Super League and Hero I-League club coaches who have thought I'm worthy of receiving this award. I'll try my best to live up to the expectations,” he expressed.

The 28-year-old had also received the Arjuna Award last year.

Meanwhile, National Women’s team midfielder Sanju was selected the winner for an excellent season; while Ratanbala Devi was the winner of the 2019-20 Emerging Women’s Footballer of the Year Award. Both the winners were selected by Women’s National Team Head Coach Maymol Rocky in consultation with AIFF Technical Director Isac Doru.

Sanju said, "Personally, it's a big milestone for me. This Award is the proof that all the hard work that we have been doing over the last few years has indeed paid off. I would like to thank AIFF for all the exposure that we have got to grow and to improve ourselves. I'd also like to thank the seniors in our team. All of them have been an immense help to me and have helped me cope with the rigours of international football. I'd also like to thank Maymol ma'am for allowing me the time and the opportunity to grow within the team and express myself on the pitch.”

Ratanbala, who has been a key fixture in the heart of the Indian Women's Team midfield, said, "This is a happy moment in my life, indeed. I've seen some of my teammates bag this award in the previous years, and it is really nice to win it myself this time round. The way our team has grown over the last couple of years is simply phenomenal. I would like to thank the AIFF, my coaches and all my teammates for helping we win this award. This will provide further motivation for us to push ahead in the future."

Furthermore, Men’s National team midfielder Anirudh Thapa was the AIFF 2019-20 Men’s Emerging Footballer of the Year. He was also selected the winner on the basis of votes from Hero Indian Super League and Hero I-League club coaches.

“This news is a breath of fresh air for me and my family -- especially whatever we have witnessed so far in this year. I would like to thank AIFF, all my teammates and coaching staff to help me achieve whatever I could. We have garnered some fantastic performances at the club front as well as for the National team last year but we need to push harder to raise the bar and we can surely do that,” Thapa quipped. “That fact that I was voted by coaches from the clubs makes this all the more special.

The 2019-20 AIFF Award for the Best Referee was by L. Ajit Kumar Meetei from Manipur, while P. Vairamuthu from Tamil Nadu was named the winner of the 2019-20 AIFF Award for the Best Assistant Referee.
