North-Goa based industrialist and veteran hockey player Atul Pai Kane will take on South Goans Hockey President Abhay in the August 15 Presidential elections of Goans Hockey, the parent body controlling the sports in the state, which will be held at a Margao hotel.

The decks for the President’s contest have been cleared with the Returning Officer Mildred Mendonca declaring the names of the two, as after scrutiny he found the papers of the two in order.

With the no withdrawals, the field is now open for the Independence contest.

Atul Pai Kane, who traces his root to Assolna village in South but now is based in Mapusa, is an active hockey player and plays regularly at the Peddem ground in Mapusa on the weekends and is a philanthropist having lend his helping to many a sporting and social projects and has grand plans to take the game to a new level with the cooperation of the stake holders in the state.

On the other hand, Hockey South Goa President Abhay Bhamaikar had no connections with the game of hockey and has never paid the game. Bhamaikar has been a chess player and was brought on board by the former Velim MLA and Goans Hockey General Secretary Farrel Furtado e Gracias to take the post of President of the district association, one year back.

The elections process for the vacant President post were declared vide a letter dated 8th March this year, signed by Farrel, but the process has been dragging on since then.

The need for the President’s elections arose as businessman Xavier Marquis, representing Sanguem Cultural and Sports Club, tendered his resignation from the post almost a year back, after serving one year of his four-year term.

The current Executive Committee was elected in the elections held on September 8, 2022 in Margao and consists of Vice Presidents: Carl D’Souza and Valanka D’Souza, General Secretary: Farrel, Treasurer: Aloysious Anthony D’Souza, Joint Secretaries: Nelly Rodrigues, Mahesh Rivankar, Executive Committee members: Inacio Fernandes, Anjulo Fernandes, Fausia Shaikh, Beny Viegas, Dattesh Priolkar, Sam Braganza, Danrette Vaz and Roger Ray D’Souza Vito.

Strangely, Valanka D’Souza got to the vice president’s post representing Bambina Recreational Club but two years after her club is not eligible to vote in the August elections and the same is the case of Sanguem Cultural and Sports Club represented by Xavier Marquis and Fausia Shaikh.

Incidentally, it was Mendonca who oversaw the September 8, 2023 election process.

Meanwhile four of the Executive committee members, Treasurer Aloysious D’Souza, Sam Braganza and Carl D’Souza will not be voting for varied reasons in the Presidential elections.

A chunk of the clubs from North Goa have been debarred and declared illegible to vote at the President elections which includes Young Sports Hockey Club which has been doing yeomen service for the game in Mapusa and its surrounding areas.

At the last elections, treasurer Aloysious was representing Young Sports Hockey Club, but his club has been debarred from elections for not renewing their Society Registration Certificate under the Society Registration Act.

Carl De Souza on the other hand, had represented Innovation Socio Cultural and Sports Club at the 2022 elections but will not be voting in the current elections.

On the other hand, Sam Braganza and Dattesh Priolkar, got to the Executive committee representing Hockey North Goa, with Sam been a member of Young Sports Hockey Club. It was not known which club Dattesh was representing as he made his way to the Hockey North Goa, who is still an active player till last year and captained the Goans Hockey team at the 2023 National Games held in Goa.

Most of the clubs contacted from North Goa had no clue when the elections of North Goa hockey district association were held and they are completely in the dark till date.

The North Goa clubs have also been caught on the wrong foot in spite of having two principal office bearers --- Treasurer and Vice President --- on the Executive Committee with only two clubs, Don Bosco Oratory Sports and Cultural Club and Goa Maverick's Sports and Cultural Club along with Hockey North Goa members eligible to vote on August 15 elections.

From South Goa, Hockey South Goa along with Integrated Goa Welfare Development Trust, Innovation Socio Cultural and Sports Club, Goa Hockey Promoters, Maina Hockey Club and Star Sports and Cultural Club will vote at the elections.

The North Goa clubs which have erased from the President electoral college for not renewing their Certificate of Registration issued by Registrar of Societies under the Society Registration act of 1960, include San Antonio Warriors, Crozan Society, Young Sports Hockey Club, Sports and Cultural Club Porvorim and Sattari Hockey Club, while the last one for not furnishing their Certificate of Registration, which the club has misplaced.

The clubs which have disappeared from the Goans Hockey radar from South Goa include Aquem Baixo Socio Cultural Association, Associacao Academica Majorda -Utorda- Calata, Navelim Hockey Club, Guddi Sports Club and Majorda Hockey Club.
