The WTT Youth Series next-gen stars from across the globe travel to Qatar for WTT Youth Contender Doha 2023
Darius Movileanu headlines the U19 Boys’ Singles draw as the World Youth No.10 goes in search of his first title in the discipline since 2021. A semifinalist at last year’s WTT Youth Star Contender event in Doha, the Romanian’s best result of 2022 was an U17 runner-up finish in Platja D’Aro. Can he improve on that display in the Qatari capital?
One player who did manage to lift a trophy in 2022 was Lee Hoyun. Securing U19 glory in Linz, the second-ranked entry in Doha will be hoping to start his 2023 campaign on a positive note.
European Youth champion Eduard Ionescu might have something to say about that as he aims to pip his higher-ranked rivals to silverware at Lusail Sports Arena, and keep an eye out for Angel Naranjo as the Puerto Rican ace eyes up a return to title-winning ways.
The U19 Girls’ Singles event is packed with talented competitors, including World Youth No.4 Elena Zaharia. Striking success twice in 2022 with mighty outings at WTT Youth Contender Spa and WTT Youth Star Contender Tunis, can the 18-year-old add to her collection of six Youth Series U19 trophies?
Two up-and-coming stars join Zaharia in the top three of the entry list, and both know exactly what it takes to prevail at this level. Both making the journey form Korea Republic, Lee Daeun is hoping to claim her first U19 title since lighting up the stage in Podgorica last October, while Kim Seongjin looks to add to the two titles she picked up last year in Linz and Helsingborg.
Maryam Ali leads the Qatari contingent in the U19 Girls’ Singles draw, returning to Lusail Sports Arena just over a week after making a main draw appearance at WTT Contender Doha 2023.
