Badminton: India chief coach Gopichand to visit Qatar on two-day trip

Talent hunt series organized by Absolute Sports Academy to take place on 6th May 2023 from 9 am to 1 am at Middle East international School and Al Arabi indoor Stadium

 

Doha, Qatar: Indian badminton legend Pullela Gopichand will be visiting Qatar on a two-day trip during which he will attend a number of functions organized by the badminton fraternity in Qatar, organizers of the event said on Sunday.

Qatar-based young badminton players will get a chance to meet and greet the former All-England champion, who is now a renowned coach and the face and name behind the much acclaimed Pullela Gopichand's Badminton Gurukul which has produced several top Indian players over the last few years.

The academy based in the Indian city of Hyderabad has since decided to expand its base outside India with the opening of its first prestigious academy at Absolute Sports Academy Qatar. The partnership will enable children receive high-quality badminton training and to train under Pullela Gopichand's Badminton Gurukul deputed coaches in Qatar and also receive specialized training in Hyderabad.

Young players in Qatar will also get a chance to showcase their talent to Gopichand, Chief coach of India, in the talent hunt series which is organized by Absolute Sports Academy on 06th May 2023 from 9 am to 1 am at Middle East international School and Al Arabi indoor Stadium.

The organizers said there are limited seats and urged parents to register their children on an immediate basis to avoid last minute disappointment.

Absolute Sports Academy Qatar, besides training children in badminton, also have day academies for cricket and football. Children get to train under some of the top coaches drawn from Europe and African countries in football while the academy has a tie up with MS Dhoni Cricket Academy by virtue of which some of the top coaches from India training some of the aspiring cricketers from Qatar.

Some of its players trained by the academy in football have since represented Qatar in age group tournaments.

Overwhelming response for Qatar Senior Open at Doha Golf Club

Doha, Qatar: Hamad Mubarak Alafnan and Ranald Ranald McNeill walked away with the winners’ prizes in the men’s section at the Qatar Senior Open 2023 at the Doha Golf Club on Saturday while Uzma Mir and Nichapa Wichaidit claimed the honours in the ladies’ section.

The two-day event, organized by Doha Golf Club and Qatar Golf Association, saw a record number of participation and the podium finishers walked away with valuable gifts and vouchers for their sterling efforts on the golf course.

Hamad finished shot a gross total of 152 in the Men’s Gross Over 50 to walk away with the top prize. Kittisak Sangorn finished runners-up while Claes Byberg, Naser Yaqoob Saleh and Theo Scheepers finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.

In the Men’s Nett Ranald took the top position followed by Winston Agcon, Mubarak Essa Al Kuwari, Andrew Napier and Fazal Abdul Kazi.

In the women’s section Uzma finished on top in the Ladies Gross Over 50’s category while Nichapa took the top spot in the Ladies Nett.

Francesco Di Marco won the Men’s Gross for over 75 years of age while Yohann Pedder won the Nearest the Pin for the first day and Adam Thornecroft won it for the second day.

A raffle draw was also held on the occasion in which the players who took part in the event were eligible.
