World Athletics creates fund to support athletes during the pandemic

World Athletics, together with the International Athletics Foundation (IAF), has today launched a US$500,000 fund to support professional athletes experiencing financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who also chairs the IAF, said the fund would be used to assist athletes who have lost most of their income in the last few months due to the suspension of international competition while the world combats the global health emergency.
Established in 1986 to support charitable causes involving athletics, the International Athletics Foundation, under the Honorary Presidency of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, has allocated resources from its budgets for 2020 and 2021 to assist athletes in need through this process.
Coe will chair an expert multi-regional working group to assess the applications for assistance, which will be submitted through World Athletics’ six Area Associations.
The members will include: Olympic champion and 1500m world record-holder Hicham El Guerrouj, Olympic pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi (representing the WA Athletes’ Commission), WA Executive Board members Sunil Sabharwal (Audit Committee) and Abby Hoffman, WA Council members Adille Sumariwalla, Beatrice Ayikoru and Willie Banks, IAF Executive Committee member and former WA treasurer Jose Maria Odriozola and Team Athletics St Vincent and the Grenadines President Keith Joseph.
The working group will meet this week to establish a process for awarding and distributing grants to individual athletes and to look at other ways to raise additional monies for the fund.
Coe said it was important that the sport supported its athletes most in need during the current circumstances.
“I would especially like to thank Hicham for bringing this idea to us, and Prince Albert for his strong support of this project. I am in constant contact with athletes around the world and I know that many are experiencing financial hardship as a consequence of the shutdown of most international sports competition in the last two months. Our professional athletes rely on prize money as part of their income and we’re mindful that our competition season, on both the track and road, is being severely impacted by the pandemic. We are hopeful that we will be able to stage at least some competition later this year, but in the meantime we will also endeavour, through this fund and additional monies we intend to seek through the friends of our sport, to help as many athletes as possible.
HSH Prince Albert II added: "I created more than 35 years ago the International Athletics Foundation with the late Primo Nebiolo to encourage and promote athletics and grant financial assistance to athletics federations and the most deserving athletes. Since its inception the Foundation has distributed for these purposes more than US$30 Million. I am delighted that we can put our resources behind this initiative so we can make a difference to the lives of athletes who are suffering financially at this time. We hope that this support will help those athletes preparing for international competition, including next year’s Olympic Games, to sustain their training, support their families and that this will relieve them of some stress in these uncertain times.’’
El Guerrouj said: “The pandemic is causing economic pain to people from all parts of society, including athletes, and this is a time when we must come together as a global community to help each other. I am delighted that Seb and World Athletics reacted so positively to my suggestion that we create a fund for athletes, and have made it happen with the support of the International Athletics Foundation. The suspension of competition has had a huge impact on many professional athletes because they can’t earn prize money so I’m really pleased that we have found a way to assist them.”

Goan football coach and UK nationals team up to help poor people in Palolem

A Bhakti Yoga teacher from United Kingdom, a Goan football coach and Englishman having business interests in Cambodia have teamed up in the Indian coastal state of Goa to reach out to poor families and help them with essential items during the lockdown period on Palolem beach, in South Goa.
Bhakti Yogi Linda Russell has been a long time visitor to India dating back to nearly three decades while Akhil Pagui, a native of Palolem, has been a youth development football coach for the last 12 years.
Andrew Mason, owner of franchise Big Easy Phnom Penh and Ko Rong Samloem, Cambodia, which generates money for charities in Cambodia, completes the circle. Mason has been extending his charitable hand to the India project initiated by Pagui and is a major fund raiser, said Linda.
In Palolem Beach, one of the most popular beach in Goa, Akhil along with other local volunteers have identified around 20 families living without financial support and who don't have money to buy provisions for the next 15 days lockdown period, said Akhil

“It's very challenging to those who are daily wage earners and who have absolutely no support. We have decided to provide them with support in the form of food packages and other essential items. This package will contain supplies for 10 to 15 days. Supplies will be distributed through a network of our volunteers in respective families. Cost of each packet is ₹ 1000/,” said Akhil.
Linda, stay put in Goa even as over 7,000 western tourists flew back to their respective countries via the special repartition flights arranged by the respective governments in association with their Indian counterparts.
“I have stayed to help my Indian friend to help feed the no income families in Palolem so they can survive this lockdown,” Linda said in response to a question.
A Bhakti Yogi for the last 26 years has so far been helping six families in Palolem since the nationwide lockdown was announced a 21-day lockdown on March 24 which was extended till May 3, to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.
Linda describes Akhil as a ‘Spiderman’ ready to help people in need.
I have met a young guy Akhil who has the rainbow above his head. Heartfelt kindness of which I have not seen in such a young chap in a long time. We are collectively are on a quiet mission here in India to help the needy. Selflessly he perseveres quietly like Spiderman with as much aid as we can help,” Linda says.
Linda says life has been hard for the local residents of Palolem residents, who have no income on their own in the lockdown period and were dependent on daily wages to keep the house fires burning.
”We shop and distribute basic staples such as fruit, vegetable, rice, flour etc. Some families went to the forest in search of food during the lockdown. We allocated families with adequate food to keep them well and healthy. Toiletries and must haves have been also been included,” she added.
“It’s a golden opportunity to change life to think creative or do something to stay with the family and people understand the value of food, especially the value of farmer. Everything is going to change. It's a learning of the life. How to leave peacefully. Here I'm helping  underprivileged people giving food and working as a social volunteer,” said Akhil.
Linda her decision to stay back and help was with a view to pay back to India what she has learnt over the years.
“Thank you India for my education of 26 years to give me an opportunity to give something good back. Love all serve all,” she adds.

She informed that they are looking for financial aid to help the families in the long run as they are running out of the money.
“We are raising money from the West and appealing for financial help,” she adds.

Vasco SC football coach Micky Fernandes turns drummer during Lockdown in Goa

What keeps Micky Fernandes, former India international and current Vasco coach busy during the corona virus lockdown? Besides his regular home training schedule he is keeping himself occupies by playing the drums and learning new tunes.

“I like playing the drums it's one of my child hood hobbies. I learn new beats,” said the 37-year-old who played for different clubs I-league clubs in Goa, Mumbai and West Bengal.

“Pick up something easy and doable ...like a jump rope what we all did as young kids. Mountain climbers, burpees, jumping Jack's and the list goes on. Yoga meditation or dance to some peppy music,” he advises people during the lockdown, who won the I-league with Dempo SC and was part of the Goa’s Santosh trophy winning on two occasions.

Question: People have been advised to remain at home (in the fight against coronavirus). What are your thoughts?
Answer: It is a deadly life threatening virus that still doesn’t have an antidote or a cure. Currently being treated symptomatically.  My personal advice..." Precaution is better than cure" self quarantine stay safe stay home.

Question: Why should everyone pay close attention to Indian government’s advisory on staying at home at a time like this?
Answer: India's population is large as compared to the ratio of the medical facilities with proper functioning ventilators and medical staff in the country.
Also with the poor sanitization and population under poverty line in case of a sudden outburst of the number of C19 persons will cause a dominoid effect among the population. We won’t be able to cope up with the rising number of this contagious disease.

Question:  Describe your day in self-isolation. What’s your daily routine, how are you spending this time at home to stay positive?
Answer: Begin my day with a home exercise plan generally involving some sort of a cardio activity and Pilates along with core strengthening and a full body mat exercise...static n dynamic stretches e.g foam rolling etc. A good well balanced meal...mostly vegetarian fruits grains and nuts as of now due to the bird flu and me self quarantine ... Away from the red meat and the formalin fish an extended lent that I normally don’t follow.  Binge watching videos on You Tube, Netflix and surfing the net and texting my friends

Question: What is your advice to Indian’s residents on maintaining their fitness at home?
Answer: Pick up something easy and doable ...like a jump rope what we all did as young kids. Mountain climbers, burpees, jumping Jack's and the list goes on.
Yoga meditation or dance to some peppy music.

Question:  What other activities are you engaged in at home that you would like to share with your fans?
Answer:  Workout need not be only in a gym with dumbbells or outdoors you can do a home work out in the comfort of your home
Mental health is also important listen to music you like and move a foot or two to your best beats.
I like playing the drums it's one of my child hood hobbies. I learn new beats. Read a book if u like paint, listen to a motivational podcast, engage in some craft, gardening, cards some board games  several online games  to keep u connected whilst away in your homes ..The list is endless.
Video calling your family work colleagues and friends or just call a friend who u normally don’t have the time to call or haven’t spoken to in a long while because of your busy schedule and reconnect with old friends. De-clutter your space and deep clean arrange your cupboard or your shoes.
Sit and chat with your parents and family over a cup of tea or coffee. Have your meals together Pray together or alone the choice is yours and the world is in need of prayers. Bird watch and admire the nature and beauty of things around you.

Question: Since athletes need international competition to stay in top form, what will you do to stay in good form without competition?
Answer: Good diet and workout, sound sleep... gratitude and prayer is a part of my new schedule

Question: Is the current period affecting athletes more or other people and how?
Answer: It is affecting everyone because sleep patterns have been altered .Some either eat more than otherwise binge watch movies or just laze in front of the TV and social media. It has made people lazy because of the lack of outdoor movement.

Question: Lots of big milestones await you this year in competitions. How do you evaluate the current situation amidst all the cancellations and postponement?
Answer: Well this came to us as a surprise totally unplanned. Fitness levels may drop because on field training and maintenance workouts at home for longer periods will do no good for professional athletes.

Question: And what is the effect on sports globally?
Answer: Everything currently had to be shut down with the fear of the C19. Our lives are at stake and keeping everyone indoors healthy and alive and not as a carrier is of utmost importance n the need of the hour now.
