INTERPOL-Europol conference calls for global response to cybercrime

SINGAPORE — Cyber experts from law enforcement, the private sector and academia have gathered in Singapore this week to devise strategies for promoting the global cybersecurity agenda. With cybercriminals using increasingly sophisticated methods and technologies to carry out their illicit activities, the 6th INTERPOL-Europol Cybercrime Conference will focus on the most pressing cyberthreats today and in the future, which include attacks against the financial and government sectors, the rise of ‘cybercrime as a service’, denial of service (DNS) attacks and business e-mail compromise scams. Under the theme of ‘Globalized efforts to tackle cybercrime’, the three-day (18–20 September) conference will look at ways in which stakeholders from all sectors can combine their expertise to make the internet a more secure environment. Key areas of discussion will include developing actionable cyberthreat intelligence, identifying cybercriminals through their online behaviour, defining the role of digital forensics, implementing national and regional legislations to tackle cybercrime, and crisis response planning. “The accelerated pace of technological innovation presents truly exciting opportunities. However, each new evolution also presents potential security gaps which cybercriminals are bound to probe,” said INTERPOL Executive Director of Police Services, Tim Morris. “We must not only remain ahead of the technological curve, we must do so collectively. Only through a concerted globalized effort which maximizes our expertise and minimizes the gaps will we be best prepared to tackle emerging cyberthreats,” concluded Mr Morris. He highlighted several recent activities including the INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge where participants investigated a simulated cyberattack launched through an ‘Internet of Things’ connected device, and a Working Group meeting on the Darknet and Cryptocurrencies which identified emerging threats such as the rise of new forms of virtual currencies. Following the 2017 INTERPOL-Europol conference, the two organizations have made notable progress in addressing the key identified areas of ransomware, the criminal abuse of the Darknet, and the implementation of a proactive approach to increase public awareness of online safety. In this respect, the two organizations have discussed the need for a strategy to combat the illegal Darknet economy through information sharing, operational support, training and awareness raising. Steven Wilson, head of the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), said: “2018 has seen greater law enforcement success in fighting cybercrime on a global basis and increased public awareness of the threat, but cybercriminals are becoming smarter and more targeted in their approach and presenting an ever-increasing threat.” “The annual INTERPOL-Europol Cybercrime Conference is an important event to bring together not just global law enforcement partners but thought leaders from industry and academia to ensure that there is a cross sector approach to tackling this threat,” he added. Several high-level delegates are attending the conference, including the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Singapore, Barbara Plinkert. In recent months, the EU has been working towards implementing a new EU Cybersecurity Crisis Response Framework, allowing authorities to react quickly, operationally and in unison in the event of a major cross-border cyberattack. The EU Law Enforcement Emergency Response Protocol, the police contribution to the crisis management structure, was presented during the event in Singapore. The conference, which brings together 198 delegates from 50 countries, also provides an opportunity for Europol and INTERPOL to reconfirm their strong commitment to continue their collaboration in the fight against cybercrime, building on successful examples such as the Global Airline Action Days targeting individuals purchasing airline tickets with stolen or fake credit card details, and the No More Ransom initiative which provides free public access to tools for decrypting data locked by ransomware. The INTERPOL-Europol Cybercrime Conference is a joint initiative launched in 2013. Held annually, it is hosted in alternate years by Europol and INTERPOL.

Dalian Delights In Successful Staging Of Historic World Championship

Dalian Delights In Successful Staging Of Historic World Championship

18 September 2018
Traditional Chinese musicians and dancers regaled athletes, officials and volunteers at the Closing Ceremony dinner for the CGG WSF Women's World Team Squash Championship in Dalian as the Liaoning Province seaport city celebrated the successful staging of the historic first world squash championship to be held on mainland China.
Egypt, with a powerful squad boasting four world top six-ranked players, successfully defended the title - beating seven-times champions England to claim the title for a fourth time in 10 years.
Athletes representing the 16 nations, many in traditional costumes (Japan team & coach pictured above), heard speeches from local dignitaries and cheered presentations to a team of local volunteers and referees from both China and overseas - all of whom had made the 21st staging of the biennial World Squash Federation championship at the Xigang Gymnasium a major success. In addition to two all-glass showcourts (pictured below), the venue also boasts four permanently-sited all-glass courts.
It was in June 2016 that the Dalian Squash Association first revealed its plan to bid for the 2018 championship: "I would like to show my appreciation to the city by bringing the World Championship here," said Secretary General Wang GuoGuang at the time. "It would be a great milestone in my life and would make me very proud."
At the farewell dinner, the local Association's Chairman Lu Zhi Jun said: "We are very grateful for the trust the WSF and the whole community of squash gave us. We also thank the Dalian Government and the Dalian Sports Bureau, plus the athletes, officials and all the volunteers who made it possible to stage this successful event.
"I hope squash will continue to develop in China and that we will all see each other again soon."
WSF CEO Andrew Shelley commented: "These WSF Women's World Championships have shown that China is not just growing in squash, but actually leading the way! The first-ever world championship played entirely on glass showcourts - the six CGG courts providing a memorable Dalian staging to complement the superb overall arrangements and hospitality the visiting players and officials experienced.
"Squash thrives in Asia. Everybody leaves with anticipation for the 2020 staging in Kuala Lumpur - for whom the bar has certainly been set high."
After being reminded of his plan over two years ago, Championship Director and event driving force Wang GuoGuang (pictured above with the winning Egypt team) said: "I had a dream .... I chased it .... and I achieved it! So I am very pleased with the outcome. I now want to concentrate on developing juniors in our country so that in future years China can compete more successfully on the world stage."
In his capacity as founder of Dalian GuoGuang Sports Facilities Engineering Co Ltd, the company which produced the Xigang Gymnasium glass courts and is the only Asian court manufacturer to be accredited by the WSF, Wang added: "Our hope is produce more glass courts in our country to help squash grow in China."
The final act of the closing ceremony was left to WSF Vice President Huang Ying How who handed over the WSF flag to 2020 hosts Malaysia, represented by former world number one and nine times World Team Championships' participant Nicol David (both pictured below).
