INAUGURAL USA CRICKET BOARD FINALIZED AS INDEPENDENT DIRECTORS ANNOUNCED

INAUGURAL USA CRICKET BOARD FINALIZED AS INDEPENDENT DIRECTORS ANNOUNCED

The inaugural USA Cricket Board of Directors was finalized today with the announcement of three Independent Directors in a historical landmark for cricket in the United States.
Following a recommendation from the independent Nominating and Governance Committee, the three positions were approved by the seven Constituent Directors. The three Independent Directors have a wealth of knowledge and experience which will bring great value to the USA Cricket Board and are as follows:
·        Catherine Carlson, Senior Vice President Corporate Partnerships and Premium Activation, Orlando Magic
·        Paraag Marathe, President of 49ers Enterprises and Executive Vice President of Football Operations, San Francisco 49ers.
·        Rohan Sajdeh, Senior Partner and Managing Director, Boston Consulting Group
The appointment of the three Independent Directors is the next step in an extensive, thorough and transparent process designed to assemble a Board of Directors that can unite the U.S. cricket community and achieve cricket’s undoubted potential in the world’s most competitive sports market. The first Chair of the Board will be elected at the inaugural Board meeting next month and will be announced shortly thereafter. Attention will now focus on an application by USA Cricket for membership to the ICC.
ICC Chief Executive David Richardson welcomed the latest development as a major milestone not only for cricket in the United States, but also the game globally. “USA Cricket now has a governance structure and a high caliber Board that we believe positions the organization well to achieve its enormous potential. A successful U.S. cricket administration is great for world cricket and we are delighted with the quality of board candidates who have been selected from an incredibly impressive field and we think the global game will benefit from their expertise.”
Catherine Carlson who will serve a three-year term is a sponsorship sales, strategic partnerships and business development expert. Prior to her work with the Orlando Magic NBA team, Ms. Carlson spent over 10 years at Disney’s Wide World of Sports which included modified junior sports programs and sports tourism initiatives.
“Having grown up with cricket as a child in Australia, I strongly believe cricket is a game that the United States will increasingly grow to love. Data from the ICC’s recent global research indicates that there is already a significant base of cricket fans in the United States.  However, sustainable growth and development of cricket here requires revenue from a diverse inventory of commercial platforms and I am looking forward to applying my knowledge and experience in this area as a member of the USA Cricket Board,” said Carlson.
Paraag Marathe, who has spent 18 seasons with the 49ers as the club’s chief contract negotiator and salary cap architect, and oversaw the construction of the Levi’s Stadium, will serve a two-year term.
“I am looking forward to this unique and exciting challenge. I believe the United States has the potential to be a major player in international cricket and we can inspire this country to fall in love with this great game. This is an incredibly talented and passionate Board of Directors and I am looking forward to working with them so that this major international sport can achieve its potential here in the United States,” said Marathe.
Rohan Sajdeh, who is a Corporate and Business Strategy specialist bringing extensive U.S. sport experience including from cricket, motorsports, football and golf, will be serving a one-year term.
“I am fortunate to have led strategic projects across the full sporting ecosystem in the U.S. and internationally in my time at the Boston Consulting Group, including impactful work in cricket related to the Indian Premier League and the recently announced ICC Test Championship. I am incredibly excited to have an opportunity to bring my experience to bear on the challenge of establishing cricket as a major sport here in the United States,” said Sajdeh.
The three independent directors join the seven elected representatives of the Board who are listed below:
Avinash Gaje – Individual Director
Venu Pisike – Individual Director
Suraj Viswanathan – Individual Director
Nadia T. Gruny – Female Player
Usman Shuja – Male Player

AWES Cup: Salgaocar FC, FC Goa in goalless draw

Salgaocar FC managed a goalless draw against FC Goa to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the semi-finals of the AWES Cup, organised by the Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportspersons in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Friday.

Salgaocar had stunned Indian Super League (ISL) club FC Pune City in their opening game and will now qualify for the semi-final if they defeat Dempo Sports Club in their concluding group clash. FC Goa have just one point from two matches and will have to depend on other results to qualify.

FC Goa could have scored full points from this game but missed many chances. The best chance came in the 90th minute of play when Hayden Fernandes missed a penalty as his attempt struck the goalpost.

The penalty was awarded after Salgaocar defender Stephen Alvares brought down FC Goa’s Imran Khan inside the box.

For most of the second session, FC Goa had chances to win this game but could not convert the chances. Salgaocar goalkeeper Jason D’Mello also effected a couple of good saves to keep his team in the hunt.

Salgaocar were impressive in the first half and should have been at least a goal ahead. Their best chance fell at the feet of Ronaldo Oliveira in the 25th minute when he pounced on a weak clearance but his effort from just outside the box struck the goalpost.

FC Goa also had the misfortune of seeing one of their attempt hit the post. Imran thought he had scored a goal when he was presented with a close-range opportunity but his attempt ricocheted off the goalpost.

Salgaocar will next play Dempo SC on September 4 while FC Goa will face FC Pune City on September 6.

LGCT Championship race hots up with 8 out of Top 10 in Rome

LGCT Championship race hots up with 8 out of Top 10 in Rome

The 15th leg on the 2018 Longines Global Champions Tour calendar sees eight out of the top ten in the LGCT ranking head to Italy’s capital city of Rome.

With the championship pressure intensifying, and anticipation mounting, Rome marks the penultimate leg of the 2018 season fight, as all eyes look towards the all-important finals in Doha, Qatar. With just two places remaining for the GC Playoffs and the prestigious Longines Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix, the very best international show jumpers will be in action from the 6th-9th September - all of whom will be vying for the LGCT Grand Prix win and a golden ticket to the Playoffs in Prague this December.

Leading the pack and in prime position to claim his first LGCT title is Ben Maher (GBR), the top British rider looking for redemption after an unusually disappointing result at the most recent leg - LGCT Valkenswaard. Speaking honestly after his round in The Netherlands, Ben said: "It’s getting close, and a lot could have changed around. Valkenswaard wasn’t a planned show for myself, but my two horses have jumped a good few rounds now and the break is coming at a good time, take a breather and regroup so we can get a couple more points for the stages ahead.”

And indeed the three week hiatus plays firmly into the overall ranking leader’s favour, where he heads to Rome on a score of 270 with fresh horses strategically selected for the Stadio dei Marmi arena. Should he do well, Ben mathematically has the opportunity to wrap up the 2018 LGCT title at the penultimate event of the season, only once before achieved by current reigning Champion Harrie Smolders (NED) - the Dutch star historically sealing the deal before the end of the season. The current World Number 1 will also be in Italy’s capital city, with Harrie on 234 points and looking to topple Ben off the top spot and keep his hopes of a second consecutive title alive.

Local star Alberto Zorzi (ITA) will be looking for a boost from his home fans, the Italian rider just one point away from Harrie on a score of 233 overall. While the top three battle for supremacy, the midfield momentum has reached fever pitch. Daniel Deusser (GER), Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS), Christian Ahlmann (GER), Scott Brash (GBR) and Christian Kukuk (GER) will all be in action for the 15th leg of the Championship, each looking to shakeup their points tally and head into the final in the best possible position.

One of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe, Rome’s historic heart contains iconic monuments and artistic masterpieces from the magnificent Colosseum and the Pantheon to the Sistine Chapel and the ruins of the Roman Forum. Visitors can take in Renaissance palazzos and Baroque fountains or simply stroll through beautiful piazzas and soak up the vibrancy of the city of La Dolce Vita. The Longines Global Champions Tour of Rome will be staged at the impressive Stadio dei Marmi for the fourth year running, a unique location which is ringed by 59 classical marble statues depicting different sports.

The stadium is one of the arenas in the Foro Italico sports area, home to the Italian Olympic Committee. Both years have seen spectators filling every space available to catch a glimpse of the world’s show jumping heroes in action. Italian riders will be competing in front of a passionate local and international crowd as the battle for the series championship reaches a crucial stage with competitors locked in a gladiatorial battle for the honours.

Many of the biggest names in the sport will be in Italy’s capital city, including the likes of Ludger Beerbaum (GER), Lorenzo de Luca (ITA), Simon Delestre (FRA), Rolf-Goran Bengtsson (SWE), Olivier Philippaerts (BEL), Bertram Allen (IRL), Michael Whitaker (GBR), Roger-Yves Bost (FRA), Peder Fredricson (SWE), Pieter Devos (BEL), Eric  van der Vleuten (NED), Henrik von Eckermann (SWE), Marlon Zanotelli (BRA), Denis Lynch (IRL) and last year’s winner Evelina Tovek (SWE).

Holy Spirit High School, Margao to participate in Subroto Mukherjee cup in Delhi

PRESS RELEASE: GFDC BOYS TO PARTICIPATE IN SUBROTO CUP AT DELHI
PANAJI: Holy Spirit High School, Margao emerged state level winners by beating Fr. Agnel Higher Secondary School, Pilar, 1-0 in the final of the U-17 boys Subroto Mukherjee inter-school football tournament organized by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) at Utorda ground on Wednesday.
The entire Holy Spirit squad comprised of boys from the Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) Residential Football Academy.
The first-time crowned state champions in this category, began the play on an impressive note as they dictated pace from the middle. The Holy Spirit lads moved the ball from end to end and displayed great composure keeping possession of the ball for long spells.
Crossing over the Margao side brought in Tahir Sheikh as a substitute for Aditya Salgaokar. The lads from Pilar found it hard to get into the rhythm of the Holy Spirit team who enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession.
Few minutes before the final whistle, an excellent penetrative through ball was sent from Harsh Patre to Meevan Dias who scored the decisive match winner by placing it to the right of the onrushing keeper of Pilar. Ryan Menezes played well in the Pilar midfield but Harsh, Valington Fernandes and Saideep Pomburphekar spoiled it for him.
The GFDC Chairman, Dr Rufino Monteiro congratulated the boys who represented the Holy Spirit Institute for their great performance despite being a year younger in the tournament. “These boys have proved that they are the future of Goan football. Our boys have earlier been the state level winners in the U-14 category and this is the first time they have been crowned state champions in the U-17 category,” told Dr Rufino.
While, the Head Coach and Technical In charge of GFDC, Derryl D'Souza also praised the performance put in by the boys.
“The boys have shown a positive mentality every time they made decisions with and without the ball. They were tactically disciplined and thus eventually became State champions. I am very happy for the boys and thank my Assistant Coaches and support staff for this fabulous result. It is great news for GFDC,” he told.
Earlier in the South District final, Holy Spirit got the better of Miracles High School, Sanguem, 5-0.

Child Sexual Abuse Awareness and Personal Safety Education workshop for coaches in Goa

The Forca Goa Foundation hosted a five day Child Sexual Abuse Awareness and Personal Safety Education workshop for 16 of its grassroots coaches. The workshop was conducted by Arpan, a leading NGO that specialises in Personal Safety Education for young people and conducting awareness programs for Child Sexual Abuse.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The five day intensive program started out by educating the coaches about child development and different stages of growth. The course then guided them through understanding the difference between sex and gender and the different gender biases that are prevalent in society.
Through activities and demonstrations the coaches were made aware of what actually constitutes sexual abuse and how to understand and work with survivors of abuse. The coaches were also taken through the different bodies and laws constituted by the government to protect children rights.
They were also shown various films depicting child sexual abuse and the trauma that a child undergoes at the hands of his/her abuser. This was done so the coaches learnt to identify symptoms and behavioral patterns and report child sexual abuse.
Making the football pitch a safe space for all children is one of the foundation’s primary goals. Empowering coaches to be more empathetic to the children they work with, will go a long way in identifying and preventing sexual abuse. Jill Ferguson, Managing Director, Forca Goa Foundation said, “I am proud of how our coaches responded to the training. Child Sexual Abuse is an incredibly sensitive but important issue. It is a topic that is not often covered in basic education, making this training all the more important. This training provided our coaches with the tools they need to help us create a comprehensive Child Protection Policy and work with their communities in a way that ensures we are creating safe spaces for the kids we work with.”
The course ended with the coaches delivering mock awareness sessions to batches of 9 year olds, 14 year olds and parents / teachers. This was done so that the coaches are prepared to go out into the community and deliver these vital messages and spread awareness.
Forca Goa Foundation believes that our coaches are not just coaches but role models and leaders of our communities. In this regard, the foundation aims to keep building the capacity of the coaches so that they have the skills and confidence to develop the children into future leaders.

Top seeds set quarter-final line-ups in Asian Games in Jakarta

After two rounds of intense action on the opening day of Squash competition in the Asian Games in Indonesia, it is the top eight seeds who will line up in both the men’s and women’s quarter-finals at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in the capital Jakarta.
All eyes are on Malaysian superstar Nicol David – the only player who has competed in all the previous five Asian Games in which squash has participated. It was as a 15-year-old that the schoolgirl from Penang burst onto the international stage at the 1998 Games in Pattaya, Thailand, where she claimed gold – going on to reach the finals in the next four quadrennial events, winning three further gold medals.
Now 34, and the oldest player in the draw, David is seeded to defend her title – and moved comfortably into the last eight after seeing off China’s Li Dongjin 11-8, 11-5, 11-1.
The former world number one will now face rising star Satomi Watanabe, the 19-year-old from Japan who is the reigning AsianJunior champion. Making her debut in the event, Watanabe defeated Iran’s Fereshteh Eghtedari 11-7, 11-5, 11-2.
Watanabe is joined in the last eight by compatriot Misaki Kobayashi, the 28-year-old eight-time Japanese National champion who surrendered her title to her younger rival last year. Kobayashi’s 11-5, 11-8, 6-11, 11-13, 11-9 victory over the Republic of Korea’s Yura Choi means that Japan has two quarter-finalists for the first time ever.
